Hello once
again Big River members!!
Hope all
are doing well! Hope all of
you are staying “COOL” in this
summer heat! Won’t be long until we will be wishing for some
warm weather.
For those
of you that did not attend the Old Rice Road Church Show, we had a great time. Thanks to Jane and all the other members of
her church that put it together.
At out last
meeting we discussed our annual Labor Day and Grand Gulf picnics. Watch for more information and try to attend these functions
as these will be our monthly meetings for September and
November.
Thanks to
all for you that attended the July meeting. We had a great
turn out. For that reason, we will have the August 11th
meeting at the same place, Western Sizzlin in Flowood.
Please make every effort to attend.
See you all soon!!

August! August? What are doing here? You better get
back in line Buster, it is not your turn yet. Or is it?
Hmmmm, I suppose it is your turn, sorry. Well since you are
here, come on in, just behave your self! How about being a
good little month and not act like June and July did!
As hot as it has been you would think August broke in line
and got here early two months ago. Heat is still turned up
but at least our long dry spell was broken and there has
been some long needed rain here and there. The Atlantic and
the Gulf have finally started to get a little rambunctious
with some tropical storm activities. If something wicked
this way is to come, lets just keep hoping and praying that
we will never ever have to deal with another Camille or
Katrina. Camille hit the Mississippi coast on August 17,
1969. I barely remember the bad weather we got as she came
through, but I was only 12 years old at the time and could
have cared less! But when Katrina hit on August 29, 2005 I
was 48 then and what she left behind was a different story.
Due
to the mass evacuations, power outages and gas shortage, we
had to cancel our 2005 Show & Shine at
Vicksburg.
I remember how hard it was to find gas and if you did find a
store that could had gas and could pump it, it was expensive
as hell! And we “just thought” they were ripping us off back
then. Can you imagine? I don’t even want to think about what
another large hurricane oil production set back would do to
things. Even though one of the Country Wisdom things I had
in last month’s newsletter read “
Most of the stuff that people worry about never
happens”…………very, very hard not to worry about that
happening again. But not a dang thing we can do but pray it
not to happen.
The following reminders are
a tad early but sometimes it is best to remind you so that
you can plan ahead and mark your calendars in case you have
something else going on and will have time to change gears to accommodate
new plans to do things with your club.
OK, as the Prez said BRC's
annual Labor Day picnic is coming up in September and our
annual cookout at the Grand Gulf Military Park is coming up
in November! Both of these activities will also serve as our
monthly meeting times. Labor Day is on Monday
September 5th. The trip
to Grand Gulf is scheduled for Saturday
November 5th. Please go
ahead and reserve both of these days to be with your fellow
club members for some food, fun, and fellowship! More
information will come as time for each trip gets closer.
I would also like to send
out an early reminder to reserve
October 15th as an important date for BRC
business. This is the date for our October meeting and many
things will be on the agenda. Nominations for officers and
directors will begin plus membership renewal was recently
changed to pay your dues at this meeting. Rest assure you
will be reminded again from now until about membership
renewal.
Y'all stay as cool as
possible, I don't want to post any heat stroke victims in
our Thoughts and Prayer next month!
Wayne
This month's meeting will be
held on THURSDAY August 11th.
The meeting will be held once again at Western Sizzlin in Flowood at
the intersection of U.S. 49 and Highway 80.
All members are
encouraged to: Attend the monthly
meetings. Arrive a little early and eat before
the meeting is called to order at 7:00. Drive
to meetings in their classic Chevys when time and weather
permits. Please wear your club shirt or other
form of clothing bearing the BRC logo for public
recognition and to show club loyalty.
Please remember that our
meetings are always on the second Thursday of each month,
unless you are otherwise notified!

Bobby Buckley
and Bobby Clark remain on our thoughts and prayer list as
they each have ongoing health issues.
Our deepest sympathies are extended to the Chambless family.
Lawrence Chambliss, who was know better at car shows and
cruise-ins as "Roundman" died
early last month after a lengthy illness. Roundman was one of our
friends in the Mississippi Street Rod Association.

THE LORD'S
PRAYER
Our Fat her, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be
done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our
trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass
against us. And lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and
the power, and the glory, for ever and ever.

Classics Monthly Meeting July 14,
2011 Wayne Hart
Reporting
BRC held its July meeting at the Western Sizzlin’ in Flowood. Membership
attendance for this meeting included Bobby Buckley, Jessie
Buckley, Bobby Clark, John Davis, Tay Everett, Dot Everett,
Wayne Hart, Jane Hart, Dale Holloway, Ann Holloway, Tommy
Hudson, Newt Mason, Carolyn Mason, John Sanders, Keith
Thurman, Paul Webb, and Judy Webb. Guests included were
Nikki Webb with baby Bailee.
Fantastic turnout for a change. Thanks to all who attended!
Old Rice Road Baptist Church
4th Annual Cruise into Summer
Jane Hart Reporting
We woke up to a gray hot morning on July 16, 2011. Our
great little church pulled together early to get ready for
a wonderful car show. The food was good-hamburger, hot dogs,
nachos, pulled pork plates and best of all homemade ice
cream.
We only had 34 registered cars. John Sanders and Paul, Judy
and Nikki Webb along with precious baby Bailee were in
attendance. The Buckley's and the Mason's paid registration,
but chose to go to the Mize watermelon festival. Jessie said
they had a great time there and Bobby came home with a "Top"
prize.
Jane and Wayne Hart and JoAnn and Bill Barbuto were show
workers and thanks to the man above, we had no rain until
after the show. I do not think anyone would have complained
because we need rain so badly. But as we all know people
don't come out for cars shows when it is cloudy and
overcast. The sun came out brightly about 11:30 or so and was it ever
HOT.
but a bit late to come to a show that is over at
1:30.
There were many silent auction items and lots of home baked
goods. I think Judy Webb bid and won many of
homemade goodies for a family reunion the next weekend. The
women of our little church can certainly whip up some fine
cake, pies and cookies.
John Sanders left with a "Top" Truck award and the Webb's
Camaro left with a "Top" Car award.
I do not believe we made a lot of money, but we had great
fellowship. Maybe we will have better luck next year.
Mize Watermelon Festival
Saturday, July 16th
Carolyn Mason Reporting
Newt, Bobby, Jessie and I left at
8:30 Saturday morning and headed south to the Watermelon Festival in Mize. There
were a total of 72 vehicles registered for the car show.
The festival was held in a
shady
park that had a
clear creek
running along side of the park. They had a makeshift train
that we rode to the festival, which was just a short walk
from the downtown car show. It was hot, but with the partly
overcast skies and shade trees, we were able to stay pretty
cool. There were lots of vendors, good entertainment,
Politicians and of course, all the
Smith County watermelon you could eat. Bobby took home a trophy from the
top 15 and we took home a large
Smith
County watermelon. On our way home
Saturday afternoon, we stopped at the
Dairy Queen in
Magee and enjoyed
milkshakes. It was a very fun filled day.
Front
Suspension Repairs and Upgrade
Holder’s 57 Chevy Belair
Reported by Larry Holder
I got my
car back last Sunday, July 23. I had the frontend replaced.
It now has new rack and pinion power steering, new upper and
lower ball joints and all a-arm bushings. It has new springs
and shock absorbers along with new brake calipers. Jim
Viberg who lives in Castlewoods did the work and he treated
me very fair price wise for all the work he did. We are
waiting for one back ordered part to arrive but I can drive
it all I want as that part does not hamper the handling.
Things I've done myself in the last month or so include
changing the plugs and installing new plug wires. I had to
come up with a few ideas of my own when it came to routing
the wires. I found out that every aftermarket wire loom is
made for a car with headers. I don't like headers. I have
had my share on other cars I've owned and had more problems
than they were worth to me. I guess that is why they make
more than one flavor of ice cream! After several attempts
and about as many bad words I finally came up with a look
that suited me. As for the bad words I have already asked
forgiveness.
I really
want to thank each member that has helped me work on the car
or have given me good advice.
Wayne has been
closer than a brother to me when it comes to my car. If not
for him it would still be in pieces. My Papaw used to tell
me all the time that if a man has friends he was blessed. I
consider myself very blessed!
Monthly report
on Project
"W"
Wayne's 57 Chevy Truck Reported by Wayne
Hart
To catch
ya'll up on progress reported in the last newsletter here is
where I left off:
Front suspension system complete
including a power steering gear box.
Rear leaf springs back on with new lowering shackles
and pins.
Had a lead on a
positrack (limited slip) disc brake
rearend.
Here are my accomplishments
and progress for this report. I ran across a used
2004R transmission. Was told by the one I bought it from,
who was told by the one who he bought it from that it came
from a "running" vehicle.
I am
hoping that nothing is wrong with it and that it will only
need some new fluid, a filter, and front and rear seals.
I discovered after I got it home and
was unloading it from the back of my GMC a day or so later
that part of the bottom front driver side ear of the
transmission was
broken off and missing, specifically one of the mounting
bolt holes. $#%*!!!!!!!!! It still has the 5 other
mounting holes and both dowel holes so it it basically just a cosmetic thing, but I
already have plans of how to patch it.
I have taken the pan off and
thankfully the
fluid looked ok and I did not come across any metal
particles or surprises. I have
already
bolted it to an old bare engine block and temporarily
installed in the frame for a trial fit. That lead on a
rearend came through and it is just what I have been looking
for and I am making plans on a run down to Gulfport in a
week or so to go get it!
I have also been energetic
and have stripped the top and rear of the cab of paint and
rust spots and both top and rear are now painted in black
epoxy primer. Lord that stuff sure makes the dents more
visible! Top is not so bad but the back of the cab looks
like someone got very p-o'd at it. Not deep dents just
knuckle bumps. I have also started stripping the front of
the cab and firewall and should have that part epoxy primed
in a few days. That now leaves the dash
and a little bit on the sides and steps to strip and epoxy prime. I
have bought my first gallon of 2K primer so I hope to start
spraying that on one day soon. If I ever get finished with
the cab I guess I will move on to the hood and doors and get
them stripped and primed with epoxy. It has been very hot
and messy doing all of this and when I quit for the day I am
black as soot and ready for a shower!
Stay tuned for more
progress. Click a pic to enlarge!
A woman takes a lover home during the day while her husband
is at work. Her 9-year old son comes home unexpectedly, sees
them, and hides in the bedroom closet. Then the woman's
husband also comes home. She tells her lover to go hide in
the closet, not realizing that the little boy is in there
already.
The little boy says, “Dark in here.”
The man says, “Yes, it is.”
Boy – “I have a golf ball.”
Man – “That's nice.”
Boy – “Want to buy it?”
Man – “No, thanks.”
Boy – “My dad's outside.”
Man – “OK, how much?”
Boy – “$250.”
A few weeks later, it happens again that the boy and the
lover are in the closet together.
Boy – “Dark in here.”
Man – “Yes, it is.”
Boy – “I have sand wedge.”
The lover, remembering the last time, asks the boy, “How
much?”
Boy – “$750.”
Man – “Sold.”
A few days later, the boy’s father says to the boy, “Grab
your sand wedge and golf ball, let's go outside and have
some short game practice.” The boy says, “I can't Dad, I
sold my ball and sand wedge.”
The father says, “What?! How much did you sell them for?”
Boy – “$1,000”
The father says, “That's terrible to overcharge your friends
like that. That is far more than those two things cost. I'm
going to take you to church and make you confess.”
They go to the church and the father makes the little boy
sit in the confession booth and he closes the door.
The boy says, “Dark in here.”
The priest says, “Don't start that junk with me again.
You're in my closet now!”
