From the President's Pen

Hello once again Big River members!!

Hope all are doing well!

If you did not attend the Grand Gulf picnic, you missed a great time, great fellowship and last but not least, GREAT food!!  Thank you Wayne! It was a beautiful drive over, with no breakdowns or running out of gas and we all made it back in one piece. Well almost, our friend Carol Evans broke her ankle we all need to send her get well wishes and lots of prayers.

All members received the invitation from the Hart’s for the annual Christmas party, Saturday, December 10th; please let him know ASAP if you plan to attend.  Thank you so much Wayne and Jane for allowing us to come to your home. We hope to see all members there. This will be our December meeting and the last one of the year. If you haven’t paid your club dues for 2012, this will be the time to do so.

Looking forward to seeing you at the Christmas Party!

Judy

Editor's 2 Cents Worth

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends. We did! Now get ready to celebrate CHRISTMAS, the day that commemorates the birth of JESUS CHRIST, to whom I would like to wish a Happy Birthday!

It is hard to believe that CHRISTMAS time is here again already and that another year is coming to an end. Even though Christmas is something I enjoy there are a few annoying things that come with it that I don’t enjoy! One thing happens to be those extra annoying holiday commercials we have to endure while trying to watch our favorite television programs! Especially that dumb Target commercial with that screaming idiot blonde dressed in her red outfit and high heals running around in the store! If you have yet to experience such commercial, just you wait. Sooner or later you will be Targeted! Don’t say I did not warn you. Who is she anyway? Never mind, I really don’t care. I am just glad that she will disappear once Santa does. Ho, Ho, Ho, she’s gotta GO! And then there are those commercials where there is a nice new luxury car out in a driveway on Christmas morning with a big ole red bow on top. Yeah right! Come on and get real. I understand that Santa had to leave the Lexus outside because he could not get it down the chimney, but how the heck did he get it there in the first place? Beginning to wonder if this Santa fellow is for real or not. Hey I may have never got a new car for Christmas but I remember once back when I was 16 or 17 that Santa left me TWO brand new RE-TREADS under the tree for my old hand me down Pontiac. I was so proud and happy to get those new tires, re-treads or not! I think the smell of those stinking things is what woke me up that morning. They had the whole house stunk up. I remember having to tote them out to the front porch before I opened any more presents, what ever they were, probably new blue jeans. I just remember getting the tires. Nice memorable times!

OK! Continuing with more Christmas things, the Annual BRC Christmas Party! As most of you know It will be on Saturday December 10th in Madison at mine and Jane’s house and we are excited and getting ready for it!! It sounds like there is going to be a lot of good food and a lot of fun and fellowship going on! As our club President mentioned and verified in her section above, I previously sent all BRC members an email with the details about the party along with an RSVP request. Most of you have quickly replied with your RSVP’s and I am much obliged! But there a few who, for some reason have not. For what ever your reason may be, it disappoints me but not going to let it be my problem. I have placed the ball on the tee for you and it is now up to you to take your little bat and swing at the ball and hit it off the tee and run as fast as you can. (Was I…..? Uh huh I was! ) We will see who can take a joke. Of all the RSVP responses I’ve got back I have received 10 yes’s and 2 no’s. As I mentioned in the email invitation, if I do not get an RSVP response back from you at all, I will assume that you don’t plan to attend and we will not expect you or depend on you to bring a food to share like the rest are doing. Sorry but RSVP’s are usually requested for a reason which I hope you can respect and understand. Now that I feel better getting that off my chest, the only thing I did not mention in the invitation is that you are welcome to come in your classic Chevy if weather permits and you don’t have to wear your Club shirts. Oh, by the way, some of us may have to take turns guarding the cars during the party. One of the neighbor dogs is a notorious tire wetter but I have a BB gun that should take care of his bad little habit! But seriously, Jane and I look forward to hosting the party once again at our house and want you to bring your Christmas spirit, your club spirit, and your appetites. Oh, and don’t forget the food you signed up to bring for those appetites!

There was an unfortunate scheduling of the Braxton Christmas Parade on the same day as the club party, but Charles Bullock would still like to invite everyone to drive your Chevys down to Braxton and be in it. If you happen to be having a bad time at our party (not likely) feel free to leave the party and head down to Braxton. You would be required to be at Braxton Community Center at 4:00 with parade starting at 5:00. Your call on this!

Last month I mentioned the second annual Chevy's for Hospice Show down in Hammond next year on March 23-24. I mentioned trying to come up with a flyer and entry form. Well I have not come across any yet, but still looking. Still the only information I can provide is that the host hotel is the Quality Inn with a room rate of $75 / night. Again this show is for 55-56-57 Chevys, 1958-1972 late great Chevys, Corvettes, Trucks, Chevelles and Camaros.

I am so happy that I don’t have to write another newsletter until next year! I've said all I’ve got to say for now, and may have said to much! Remember the “Reason for the Season” and please enjoy and celebrate it for what it was meant for. MERRY CHRISTMAS & Happy New Year everyone!

Thoughts & Prayers

Bill Barbuto’s mother had some heart complications last month and had to spend a little time in the hospital but seems to be doing much better. Jessie Buckley sent word that Bobby has asked to be removed from the prayer list since he has been doing so much better. Your prayers for him worked and he appreciates all whose been praying for him! She said that he is much better mentally but still has some speech problems but working on that. Bobby Clark is still dealing with complications from his stroke so please keep him and Diane in your thoughts and prayers. We send our thoughts and prayers to our friend Carol Evans who broke her foot while at Grand Gulf Military park with us last month. We pray for a speedy recovery for her!

Please remember to always pray for our Country and for the right leadership to come along and bring America back.

NEWS and stuff!

Big River Classics Monthly Meeting
& Annual Grand Gulf Military Park Cookout
November 5, 2011

Wayne Hart
Reporting

Big River Classics held its November meeting during our annual cookout at Grand Gulf Military Park down in Port Gibson. Members present included Bobby Buckley, Jessie Buckley, Bobby Clark, Diane Clark, Tay Everett, Dot Everett, Wayne Hart, Jane Hart, Dale Holloway, Tommy Hudson, Newt Mason, Carolyn Mason, John Sanders, Linda Sanders, Paul Webb, and Judy Webb. Special friends Jim and Carol Evans tagged along with us in their ’57 Mercury. The Clarks also had friends from their church come along and join us for the cookout. I am sorry but there names have slipped my mind. Good folks though! The trip went as planned as we met in Clinton on Saturday morning and drove from there to Vicksburg and down Highway 61 to Grand Gulf with the Everett’s falling in line on the way. The Sanders met us at the park a little later in the morning as they traveled a different route coming from Mendenhall. Tay and I were in charge of the grill once again and we cooked around 36 hamburgers and 48 hotdogs to go with all the other foods that were brought along. The Vicksburg Post had advertised that Big River Classics would be at the park this day having a “car show”! Not a show in that since but rather a showing of our Chevys. There were a few from the area who read about us going to be there and made a special trip down to look at the classics. We had enough food left that we were able to invite several of the Park Staff to jump on a burger and hotdog. Always feels good to share! I look forward to next years trip and cookout.

EMERALD COAST CRUIZIN
November 10-12

Panama City
, Florida
Reported by Dot Everett

Bobby & Jessie Buckley and Tay & I arrived at our hotel about noon Thursday.  It was very windy, cloudy, and cold.  We were thinking, “this is Florida?”  The hotel was nice--small kitchen, living room with TV and a great view of the beach, and nice bedroom with TV.  After unloading, we traveled to the park where all the vehicles are displayed.  We walked a little while, but Jessie & I got back in the car, it was too cold for us.

Friday was nicer, sun was shining and it was a little warmer.  The guys dropped us off at the mall and went back to the park.  We got some really nice bargains, but eventually got hungry.  The guys came and picked us up for lunch.  Jessie & I went back to the hotel and the guys went back to looking at cars & trucks.  Determined to enjoy the sand and water, Jessie & I went to the beach and wiggled our toes in the sand while the water washed our feet.  The sand was beautiful.  We sat around the pool in the sun for a while.  We were supposed to meet the Monroe group for supper, but we got lost and never found the restaurant, ended up at Applebee’s.

Saturday Jessie & I slept in while the guys went back to the park.  The awards and cash drawings ($7500) were scheduled for 4 p.m. so Bobby & Tay treated us to lunch at Arby’s and then we went for the awards.  There were over 2000 vehicles registered.  The sponsors gave awards to their favorites (not us).  It was getting dark, finally drawing for the money.  Again not us.  We met the Monroe group about 6 p.m. at Captain Anderson’s, a very nice restaurant, and enjoyed seafood.

Sunday morning checked out of the hotel about 9:30 and headed for home.  It was a long, tiring ride.  I believe the trip home was farther than the trip to Florida.  We got home about 3 p.m.  It’s a nice trip for the guys, but not much (except shopping) for the gals.

Florence Days
November 12

Florence, MS

Reported by Bill Barbuto

Jo-Ann and I went to Florence for Florence Days. At the car show we ran into Ed and Mary Robertson, Sydney Overby, and the Webb's. It was nice seeing everybody.  When it came time for awards, Sydney took best interior. Ed and Mary got best engine, top 10 and best of show. Congratulations to our former members for a job well done.  It was a nice day had by all.

Monthly report on Project "W"
Wayne's 57 Chevy Truck
Reported by Wayne Hart

My pitiful little progress report this month is a little disappointing, for me anyway. I found out that the 1991 Z71 truck 350 that I was going to use in my truck turned out to be a dud! All the trouble I went thru to go out of town with my trailer and load the wrecked truck up and bring it home just for the motor was all in vain. After I removed it from the truck and got it on the engine stand and took off all the parts that I did not want on it, I mounted it to my 2004R transmission and then got it situated on the truck frame where it needed to be with the truck cab temporarily back in place. After I got the new engine cross member and motor mounts bolted to the block I marked where it all needed to rest in the frame with plenty of distributor room and drilled holes and bolted it all in. Then I took all that back apart and got the motor back on the stand and removed the intake and heads. I was so happy to find that all 8 cylinders were perfect with no wear ridges. Yes, no boring required! I continued removing the pistons and rods after I number stamped them. All looked good, looked good until I started taking the bolts out of the main caps. I had number stamped the caps and started removing the bolts from each as I took them out. The very rear one came out fine but when I started taking the bolts out of the second one, that’s went the “Schlitz can” hit the fan! That main cap came out in three pieces and then the next one was cracked but broke into two pieces when I applied pressure to it. All of the rest came out whole. Since this was my first time to number stamp main caps, I had to call Paul to see if I just did not know my own strength when I stamped them. He asked did I use a sledge hammer? After I told him no and that I used a plain old claw hammer he assured me that I did not break them. That made me feel a little better that I did not break the d@%& things! Next all the crank shaft journals were pretty rough and looked like crap! Further inspection of the dirty top pistons revealed numbers stamped on them that told me they were oversize and the engine had been bored .040 over which explained the cylinders being without ridges. Dang, had my self a 357 I guess! After finding out all this I was advised that I might as well junk the motor unless I wanted to go through the expense of getting it line bored with new main caps and crank shaft. Not happening, I am canning that motor! Anyone one want it? Heads and pistons may be still good and of use to someone. Got my eye on another motor that I originally had my eye on.

I guess the most positive news I can report on this month is that I found an Ebay deal on an after market blank tail gate for my truck. I won the bid it on it and have already received it and it looks good. Only problem is that it has a Made in Taiwan sticker on it, can you imagine that? I will be so glad to see the day when all these parts I have stockpiled are installed and in use on this project and I can quit calling it a project! It’s getting there, a little bit here and a little bit there. I doubt much gets done this month with the holidays and all being here. Maybe my New Years resolution will be to bust a#% and getter done!

I would still like to part out the remainder of the wrecked Chevy Z71 if anyone is interested or know of anyone who might be.

JOKE (old one)

Bubba’s boss sends him to the local lumber yard for some wood. When Bubba gets there he steps up to the sales counter where the salesman asks “Yes sir, what can I do for you”?

Bubba replies “Well, my boss sent me down here to get some 4 x 2’s, you got any?”

Salesman questions “You sure he didn’t mean 2 X 4’s and not 4 x 2’s”?

“Hummm?” says Bubba.  “I ain’t sure, let me go and ask him, be right back”

Bubba leaves and comes back. “You was right mister” he says. “My boss said he wants  2 X 4’s”.

“Ok” says the salesman. “About how many 2 X 4’s will y’all be needing”?

“Shoot!” says Bubba.  “I ain’t sure, let me go and ask my boss, be right back”.

Bubba leaves again and comes back and tells the salesman “Hey, my boss wants about 200 or so of them 2 X 4’s”.

“Ok” says the salesman. “One more question, how long you need them”?

“Dang!” says Bubba.  “I ain’t sure, let me go ask my boss, be right back!”.

Bubba leaves and comes right back again and says “Mister, my boss said he is going to need those 2 X 4’s a LONG time cause we gonna build a house.”
