From the President's Pen

Hello once again Big River members!!

Hope all are doing well!

First I would like to thank all that came out Saturday to go to Harrisville to support our fellow club member, John Sanders, for a benefit to help the firefighters of Harrisville.  We had a great showing and the fellowship was like going back to the past. I, for one, really enjoyed the day with the other members!

October 13th meeting has been moved to the Golden Corral 988 Top Street, Flowood. At this meeting we will take nominations for officers, please consider taking one of these positions.

November we will have our Grand Gulf picnic. If you have never attended you need to make plans to do so. We have a great time and Wayne is always cooking up delicious burgers and dogs. We will finalize plans for this gathering at the October meeting.

See you all soon!!

Judy

Editor's 2 Cents Worth

Some fancy poetry, by Wayne:

Spring done sprang and summer done gone,
Fall’s finally here, you can stop mowing the lawn!

Well, you can just about stop the mowing. I really can’t complain much about having to cut grass all summer because as hot and dry as it was the grass was struggling to grow and survive anyway. The kid next door cut our grass a few times this year before his mower conked out but there were a few times Jane and I had to do it ourselves. I know we all are glad to see an end to the heat wave and ready for this fall weather to arrive. I have heard of an old wife’s tale that says when an oak tree has an abundance of acorns in the fall, then the winter will be cold and wet. If there is anything to this tale, then I am afraid we are in for a cold wet one because one of our oaks is loaded to the max with acorns! I guess time will tell.

There are reminders on down in the newsletter about membership renewals this month and also about the beginning of nominations for Board of Directors positions. Please make sure you read them. Let me make this perfectly clear right now. Do not, I repeat,  DO NOT even think about nominating me for a Hoover dam thing unless someone else wants the job of taking over this web site and newsletter!

Even though the Prez has reminded you, I would like to double remind you to not forget about our 4th Annual cookout at the Grand Gulf Military Park down at Port Gibson next month on Saturday November 5th.  It is still a month down the road, but it would be nice for you to mark your calendars so you will not make plans to do something else this day. There will be burgers and dogs for sure and probably all kind of other goodies, if you bring them! We came out on the losing end with our plans for the Labor Day picnic outing last month because of a rainy morning. Hopefully the Grand Gulf outing will make up for it. We will have our November meeting after we eat, continue with nominations (if any) and then members present will vote on our new board.

It is also about time to be planning our annual Christmas party! Yes CHRISTMAS PARTY! Halloween is at the end of the month, which means THANKSGIVING is next in line.

Oh, I about forgot! Check out brother Dale Holloways' member page. I took a picture of his '57 while we were at Harrisville and have it posted. Now if I could only get a picture of him with his lovely bride Ann, their member page would be complete.

In God We Trust!
Happy HalloWayne!

  Attend the monthly meetings.
Arrive a little early and eat before the meeting is called to order at 7:00.

Thoughts & Prayers

Please keep Bobby Buckley and Bobby Clark in your thoughts & prayers as they both continue to fight their health problems. To my knowledge all other members and their families are doing well. Jack Brown's daughter Kathy received great news on one of her tests but please keep her in your prayers that she will soon get good news on other health issues. If you run out of folks to pray for then please pray for our Country.

Membership Renewals

It is October and time for BRC membership renewals. Everyone is encouraged to renew and pay your dues at the meeting this month. If you can not make this meeting and know that you will not be able to attend the November and December meetings then it would be perfectly all right and wise to just write a $25 check and mail it to:

Big River Classics
P.O. Box 821225
Vicksburg, MS 39182

You have until December 31 to renew. Those who fail to do so will find their valuable membership with BRC automatically suspended. We don’t want this to be enforced on anyone, but if you don’t pay, you just can’t stay......

2012 Nomimations

It is also time for the beginning of nominations for 2012 Officers and Board of Directors during the October meeting. If you would like to be an officer or would like to throw in a nomination for someone to be an officer then please feel free to so.

NEWS and stuff!

Big River Classics Monthly Meeting
September 8, 2011

Wayne Hart
Reporting

Big River Classics’ annual picnic at River Bend on Labor Day was canceled because of rain but just getting long needed rain was a welcome excuse for the cancellation. Since our September meeting was to be held during the picnic, the meeting was rescheduled and held once again at the Western “Cistern”, in Flowood. Members present included JoAnn Barbuto, Bobby Buckley, Jessie Buckley, Bobby Clark, Diane Clark, Tay Everett, Dot Everett, Wayne Hart, Dale Holloway, Ann Holloway, Tommy Hudson, Patricia Hudson, John Sanders, Paul Webb, and Judy Webb. Nikki also sat in on the meeting with her daughter Bailey along with another Webb family member, Lauren.

Thanks to all who attended!

Red Carpet Classic Auto and Bike Show
September 17, 2011
Vicksburg,
MS
Reported by Dot Everett

The day began nice and cool, but heated up quickly.  There were 51 vehicles registered, plus the bikes.  It was a nice show with lots of sightseers.  Elvis even showed up and sang mostly to the ladies.  I was honored with a scarf from him, it was even wet with his sweat.  Tay received a nice creeper and gift certificate for an oil change as door prizes.  His '55 was voted one of the "Sweet 16".

Sad story--one of the guys from Vicksburg, who has participated in our O'Reilly Show, was driving his Camaro to the show and hit a deer.  It did quite a bit of damage.

Magee Crazy Day
September 17, 2011
Magee, MS

Reported by Jessie Buckley (by way of Bobby Buckley)

I can only report about the BRC members that Bobby said he saw.  Bobby rode with Newton Mason in his ‘55 Chevy down to Magee.  Bobby Clark, Charles Bullock, John Davis and John Sanders were also there. Bobby said he thought John Davis won some kind of award with his SSR.

 Harrisville Day Car Show
September 24, 2011

Reported by Wayne Hart

Saturday September 24th was Harrisville Day and BRC club member John Sanders put together a car show down there to help raise money for the Harrisville Fire Department. Bill & JoAnn Barbuto, Bobby & Jessie Buckley, Charles Bullock, Bobby Clark, Wayne & Jane Hart, Larry Holder, Dale Holloway, Newt & Carolyn Mason, and Paul & Judy Webb met up in Florence at the Quest Community Church on Highway 469 before driving down to Harrisville. Instead of awards, all car show participants were given tickets for a free meal over at the fire department. Participants were encouraged to donate money In lieu of registration fees. There was a turnout of around 25 vehicles in the show and $300 in donations were raised. Big River Classics donated another $100 dollars to help bring the car show proceeds to a total of $400. There were other activities such as live singing and a few vendor booths. It was a fun relaxing day for a small town car show!

PROJECTS & sTUFF

Project  Nomad
Barbuto '55 Nomad

Reported by Bill Barbuto

The week of September 12th Larry Holder was pushing me to get the nomad running. Everyday we did a little bit more. We put in the radiator, a/c condenser, electric fan, hoses, and filled all fluids. We found a couple of leaks and corrected them. We had to replace the water pump due to a defect where the nipple for the heater hose was split.

On Saturday, September 17, Wayne came by to help wire the ignition. Larry was determined the engine was going to run that day. With many prayers, (under our breath) and a few hail Marys', with our fingers crossed, at 2:00 PM the Nomad fired up for the first time in at least 17 years! There were Hi-Fives, hand shaking, phone calls, and hugging going on. Jo-Ann received most of the sweaty, dirty hugs.  This was a great moment ! The engine sounded real nice. Not a skip, cough or backfire. The engine ran smooth. It was loud because of open pipes.

Most know we have owned this car for 10 1/2 years. The car came from Maine in 2001. It was stored in a barn there for at least 7 years prior. The engine came out of a 1974 Nova and put into a 1989 S-10 pickup in 1998. It came out of the truck 2 years later and has not been fired up since until now.

The next day , the 18th the brakes were bled and the  Nomad took its first cruise out of the garage, across the driveway, and back and forth a couple of times before backing back into the garage........all under an idle speed because the  throttle cable wasn't hooked up. What a feeling!!!!  I’m cruizin’ now. I can't wait to take it down the road.

Thanks to Larry, Paul, Wayne and everyone else who has helped me with either hands on or even advise, I see this car making progress. Waahhhhoooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Steering Wheel & Speedometer Repair
Holder’s 57 Chevy Belair

Reported by Larry Holder (The Peg)

Well, I just finished installing my pod and new electrical gauges in the front speaker location and they work! I must admit it wasn't on the first try. They look great and seem to be more accurate than the old gauges. With the old gauges out I can now use the emergency brake and it also works. If you have never seen a one legged man under the dash of a car before, you have missed a funny treat. Do not look for pictures. All the other work on the front end is finished and I now hope to put some miles on the ole '57!

Monthly report on Project "W"
Wayne's 57 Chevy Truck
Reported by Wayne Hart

Well, I do not have an abundance of progress to report on this time around, but here is what little I managed to accomplish in September. Parts of my weekends have been spent trying to tidy up my cluttered shop. It is amazing how things get when you don’t put tools and stuff back where you got them from. When your counter tops and tables finally fill up then the floor is the next catch-all! I have at least got the shop where I can get around it once again.

The first thing I had to do was return one of the rear brake calipers because the piston would not recess far enough in for the brake pads and go over the rotor. Of course when I got the replacement, I had to clean, prime, paint and install it for the second time. It was just a minor thing but aggravating just the same.

Since installing the rear end and now having a rolling chassis I have been concentrating on plumbing a brake system. For now I have decided to go with a manual dual reservoir master cylinder to work the 4 wheel disc brake setup.  I am keeping the master cylinder in the stock position on the frame under the cab.  I bought a bracket from CPP to accommodate a dual reservoir master cylinder. I am using one for a ’67 Corvette. I have both bracket and master cylinder temporarily mounted for pre-fitting the brake lines. I wanted to run hard lines out of the rear brake calipers but had no luck finding 90 degree adaptors. I wound up using some overpriced flexible banjo brake hoses made by Russell that the Jegs salesman recommended. Oh yeah, he sent me the wrong size banjo bolts too, which I will be sending back to him. Annoyed? Nooooo, not me.

I have also been experimenting with the correct mounting location of a V-8 on the frame. Found out that there were special brackets to mount a V-8 and that those holes in the frames for the 6 cylinder are not for correct V-8 mounting of any sort. I have been offered a free engine which I am going to go get this month and hope to have a good report on it next month.

Sorry, no progress pictures this month, but please stay tuned for more progress next month.

Something Funny

AND THAT’S WHEN THE FIGHT STARTED

One year, I decided to buy my mother-in-law a cemetery plot as a Christmas gift...
The next year, I didn't buy her a gift.
When she asked me why, I replied,
"Well, you still haven't used the gift I bought you last year!"
And that's when the fight started.....

My wife and I were watching Who Wants To Be A Millionaire while we were in bed.
I turned to her and said, 'Do you want to have Sex?'
'No,' she answered. I then said,
'Is that your final answer?'
She didn't even look at me this time, simply saying, 'Yes..'
So I said, "Then I'd like to phone a friend."
And that's when the fight started...

I took my wife to a restaurant.
The waiter, for some reason, took my order first.
"I'll have the rump steak, rare, please."
He said, "Aren't you worried about the mad cow?"
"Nah, she can order for herself."
And that's when the fight started.....

My wife and I were sitting at a table at her high school reunion, and she kept staring at a drunken man swigging his drink as he sat alone at a nearby table.
I asked her, "Do you know him?"
"Yes", she sighed,
"He's my old boyfriend. I understand he took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago, and I hear he hasn't been sober since."
"My God!" I said, "Who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?"
And that's when the fight started.....
______________________________

My wife sat down next to me as I was flipping channels.
She asked, "What's on TV?"
I said, "Dust."
And that's when the fight started.....
________________________________

My wife was hinting about what she wanted for our upcoming anniversary.
She said, "I want something shiny that goes from 0 to 150 in about 3 seconds."
I bought her a bathroom scale.
And that's when the fight started.....
______________________________

My wife was standing nude, looking in the bedroom mirror.
She was not happy with what she saw and said to me,
I feel horrible; I look old, fat and ugly. I really need you to pay me a compliment.'
I replied, "Your eyesight's damn near perfect."
And that's when the fight started.....
