Hello once again Big River members!!

Hope all are doing well!

It is that time again for our annual Labor Day picnic. Hope all of you are making plans to attend since this will be one of our first outings in a while. Hopefully it will cool off soon so we can start doing more and attending some of the last shows of the season.  That was one of the reasons we joined this club. You all had such fun and comradery when we would see you out and I hope to get back to that.

The October meeting we will be back at the Western Sizzlin. At this meeting we will take nominations for officers; please consider taking one of these positions.

In November we will have our Grand Gulf picnic. If you have never attended, you need to make plans to do so. We have a great time and Wayne is always cooking up delicious burgers and dogs. Thank you Wayne!!

See you all soon!!

Judy

Editor: "Nooseletter Woes & Comments"

So much for trying to sweet talk August. It was just as bad! I sure wish there was a market for “sweat” because if I could have collected and bottled mine, me and Jane would have become millionaires the last couple of months and I bet some of the rest of you could have been too. Been hottern’ Hades! You can bet your bippy that as September goes it will eventually start showing us some long needed relief. Fall is around the corner people so be patient! All we have to do it wait on it.

Speaking of hot, here is a hot request! The Harrisville Fire Department needs our help. At our last meeting John Sanders handed out flyers in hopes for us to all come down to Harrisville, MS on September 24 for Harrisville Day and be a part of a “FREE” open car and truck show there!  It will be at the Harrisville Baseball & Community Park. Every registered car will get two free Chicken plates or two sausage dog plates. Even though registration will be free, the Harrisville Fire Department is hoping for generous donations in lieu of registration fees. As John put it, it ain’t cheap keeping a fire truck's gas tank full and it takes gas to get to fires and other emergencies. Registration is from 9 until noon that day. Hey, BRC has not united and been to hardly any shows this year like we use to do and I think we should make an effort to help out these firemen!

As the Prez said it is once again time for BRC to head up the Natchez Trace to River Bend for our annual Labor Day picnic on Monday September 5th. The picnic always serves as our September meeting so all members are encouraged to attend not only for club business but also for fun and fellowship and to get those Chevys out and enjoyed! While we are there the idea is also to take a good picture of our membership and Classic Chevys to send with our donation to the Palmer Home for Children in Columbus since we are unable to make a personal trip to the home. BRC, if you want to be included in this photo with the rest of us and the Chevys, then attending the picnic will make that possible. And I was going to say that who ever is there and did not help work the O’Reilly show back in May can take the pictures, but I am not going to say that. Jane and I plan to get to the park as early as possible to secure the pavilion for BRC before it is overtaken by others again! Despite our early arrival last year we lost pavilion privileges but were fortunate to get the end area with tables on down past the pavilion. The rest of you are all to meet at the Trace Information building in Ridgeland that morning around 10:00-10:30 and drive from there to River Bend in a Classic Chevy caravan. Bring your own picnic basket, cooler and chairs and maybe some skeeter spray just in case. And if you don't see any blue shirts and the BRC banner under the pavilion then drive on down until you do!

EARLY REMINDER! Please do not forget that coming up in October, club membership renewal dues are now required to be collected at that meeting, along with the beginning of taking nominations for club officers and directors. Again, as the Prez said, please consider taking one of the positions.  Some of you may think what’s the big deal about having officers to run a club but let me assure you of this……..no officers, no club. I am not the boss, I am just stating the facts and giving you all something to consider.

ANOTHER EARLY REMINDER! All BRC members are invited and encouraged to attend our 4th Annual cookout at the Grand Gulf Military Park on Saturday November 5th. We started doing this back in 2008 to celebrate BRC’s 10th Anniversary and I don’t think you will find a member who has gone and not had a good time or left hungry! BRC has now been around 13 years and even though that is an unlucky number, that does not matter. We are going to celebrate anyway! Maybe we will even have another anniversary cake to devour after the burgers and stuff? It is a beautiful cruise down to Grand Gulf once getting on Highway 61 at Vicksburg. I personally am looking forward to climbing the tower again after we eat, even though I was “skaid” the last time. I hope we have a complete club turnout this year. Mark your calendars so you will not schedule something else that day. This day will also serve as our November meeting. Thank you Judy for faking them out and telling them that I have been cooking them burgers and dogs. Got the dog part right, we just will not let on to what animule the burgers might be made from this year!

Also coming up in November, Jessie Buckley said to let everyone know that she and Bobby are planning to go to Panama City Beach for the Emerald Coast Cruizin’.  She said Tay and Dot are going too and maybe Newt and Carolyn and if anyone else is interested that you are welcome travel with them. Plans right now are that they will be leaving early Thursday morning (11-10) and coming back Sunday (11-13). Need to discuss future plans at the next two meetings.

That’s about enough from me for now. In closing let me remind everyone this month to say a prayer for the victims and for the families of those victims lost on September 11, TEN SHORT years ago, because of the unforgivable cowardly terrorist attack on the United States of America! Even though we should proudly display the “Stars & Stripes” of our great country every day, please make it a point to especially get those flags out and flying in the breeze on this day!  Pray to God that HE may continue to bless America and that HE also bless those Navy Seals who on May 2, 2011, eliminated “OBL”!

OBNOXIOUS  BASTARD LIQUIDATED!  May he burn in hell for eternity.
If that offended anyone feel free to leave the USA because I doubt you truly belong here......nuff said?

I am proud to be an AMERICAN and I'm out of here!

In God We Trust!

Wayne

 August Meeting

This month's meeting will be held on MONDAY September 5th during our annual Labor Day picnic at River Bend. See editorial section above if you somehow missed the information.

All members are encouraged to:
  Attend the monthly meetings.
Arrive a little early and eat before the meeting is called to order at 7:00.
Drive to meetings in their classic Chevys when time and weather permits.
Please wear your club shirt or other form of clothing bearing the BRC logo for public recognition and to show club loyalty.

Please remember that our meetings are always on the second Thursday of each month, unless you are otherwise notified!

Thoughts & Prayers

I am unaware of any members other than Bobby Buckley and Bobby Clark to list in our Thoughts & Prayers this month, which is a good thing! Please keep these two fine men in your thoughts and on your prayer lists as they both continue to fight ongoing health problems. Our friend Jack Brown's daughter Kathy needs our prayers also as she is awaiting answers to possible health issues she may be facing. We need to pray for our Country, pray for our leaders to start taking care of our Country first instead of last, for those suffering from Hurricane Irene on the East coast, and always pray for and remember the victims of September 11, 2001. May the Navy Seals keep up their good work too!

Short but sweet. The only thing I did was put the spark plug wires on . Larry came over and helped.

Steering Wheel & Speedometer Repair
Holder’s 57 Chevy Belair

Reported by Larry Holder

Well, I figured since I had so much done to the front end of my '57, the inside could stand a little work. I pulled the steering wheel and took it to Mike Martin to paint for me. I was very surprised at what a half pint of red paint costs. The paint guy at Ryan's said red is the most costly paint you can buy. With the steering wheel off I decided this would be a good time to replace all the stuff inside the steering column. My speedometer didn't work so why not pull the unit out and fix it. I had a set of used gauges that I had gotten off of Ebay at a great price so let’s see if the speedometer works.

I pulled the odometer out of the gauge pod and guess what, it would not spin. Now I know why it was so cheap. I got on the net and found a site that showed the complete teardown and rebuild of an odometer. That's when I learned that a Tri-Five had a wick under a very small brass freeze plug. Also, in big bold letters it said to be very careful removing the mph indicator. If you break the little rod that the hand goes onto the odometer is trash. This made me feel great! So figuring I had one that I knew wouldn't work, I said what the heck, might as learn something today. After getting the unit out the first thing I see in big bold letters is be very careful removing the mph hand. If the shaft it goes on breaks you now have two odometers that won't work. It said turn the hand counter clockwise and pull with your fingers and it will easily come off. Maybe in 1960 but not in 2011! After much WD-40 and much more wrangling I got it off with out breaking it. I was so happy. Now I sprayed more WD-40 and guess what, it still would not spin. Now I know why this thing was so cheap! Then, the genius that I am, had an idea. get an old cable, hook it to the odometer and my electric drill. Sometimes I even surprise myself. Starting very slowly and continuing to spray with cleaner it started to spin. More spinning and cleaning it worked like new. I decided that I would reset the mileage indicator to the mileage that was on the engine that Tay installed a few years earlier. A little simple subtraction and BINGO! NOT SO FAST PEG. Have you ever tried to change the readings on one of these things? After about an hour of twisting and turning I figured it out. Another small victory for THE PEG! Then the terrifying thought of when I was a kid and Pappaw would give me his old pocket watches. I would take them apart and when I would get them back together I had parts left over and they never worked. Why would I think of this now? I got the mph hand back on with no trouble, cleaned everything and got it back together with no parts left over. I sure hope my Pappaw was watching. The next thing was to test and see if it still worked. I hooked the drill and cable up and it worked perfectly and made no noise at all.  Now all I have to do is get put back in the dash. I think I will call my old buddy Wayne!!!!!!!!!

Monthly report on Project "W"
Wayne's 57 Chevy Truck
Reported by Wayne Hart

I am excited and proud to announce that I now have another important piece for my truck! Took a day’s vacation and rode down to Gulfport on August 5 where I bought the rear end I have mentioned previously. It is off of a ’79, ’80 or ‘81 Formula Firebird. It is a limited slip, rear disc brake rear end with 3:42 gears and is the perfect width for the truck. It was pretty rusty coming from the coast and all but rust can be blasted off, so I paid the man $250 and came home with it. After I got home with it I popped the cover and found that the inside needed some cleanup too. Tried to flush it out with parts cleaner and kerosene without having to remove anything, but one of the pinion bearings was not feeling right nor sounding right. Paul Webb talked me through removing the axles and gears where I could get to and clean out the inside better and get to the axle tubes and pinion bearings. Not that I wanted to get this deep, I finally had to remove the pinion. The outer bearing had problems that cleaning and flushing would not fix so I decided to go ahead and replace it and the inner bearing both at this point of disassembly. Mo’ money, mo money! Made a trip to the parts house for both new pinion bearings and races, pinion seal, crush sleeve, and axle seals. I guess Paul pretty much figured out my ignorance on rear end “re-assembly” and knew that I was about to get in over my head and took pity on me and made the offer to help me put this booger back together if I brought it over to him. I could not and did not refuse that offer and one Saturday morning I took my rear end to Pearl! We (Paul) had it all back together and adjusted in about an hour or so! Never heard of gear back lash, pinion crush sleeve tension and all the other things he did putting this thing back together. Glad there are experts who look after ignoramus’s like me! Paul, your service was greatly appreciated and I thank you again for saving me from future rear end disaster. I guess you could say Paul "saved my rear end"?

Another problem with the rear end, it was missing the brake calipers and I had to start searching for some new ones. It still had the rotors on it but after I finally got them both off and all cleaned up, I took them to the parts house to be turned but after inspection I was told that they had been turned down as far as they could be turned. Too dang thin! What else? After pricing calipers and rotors locally, I wound up using one of our past Show & Shine sponsors, RockAuto. I got a good deal on a pair of brake calipers and a greater deal on a pair of wholesaler closeout rotors from them. Of course I had to take a small beating by not having caliper cores to turn it, but still came out better than buying locally. I hate not giving the local parts houses my business but sometimes you got to save how ever you can save. The calipers and rotors were delivered promptly in a about 3 days!

I now have the rear end sandblasted, primed with Duplicolor engine primer and painted with Duplicolor gloss black ceramic engine paint, two coats. When the calipers and rotors finally arrived, I primed and painted them and put them in place on the rear end. And on Sunday August 28 I put the rear end under the frame and bolted it to the leaf springs. I mounted my other two temporary tires and rims to it and let it all down to the floor. I now has me a "rolling chassis"! And yes I am tickled to death and got a smile you can't slap off!

Stay tuned for more progress. Click a pic to enlarge!

Joke of the Month

Bubba Applies to Wal-Mart!

An office manager at Wal-Mart was given the task of hiring an individual to fill a job opening. After sorting through a stack of resumes, he found four people who were equally qualified. He decided to call the four in and ask them only one question. Their answer would determine which of them would get the job.

The day came and as the four sat around the conference room table the interviewer asked, "What is the fastest thing you know of?"

Acknowledging the first man on his right, the man replied, "A THOUGHT". It just pops into your head. There's no warning that it's on the way; it's just there. A thought is the fastest thing I know of".

"That's very good!" replied the interviewer. "And now you sir?" he asked the second man.

"Hmm.... let me see. A blink! It comes and goes and you don't know that it ever happened. A BLINK is the fastest thing I know of."

"Excellent!" said the interviewer. "The blink of an eye, that's a very popular cliché for speed."

He then turned to the third man who was contemplating his reply.

"Well, out at my dad's ranch, you step out of the house and on the wall there's a light switch. When you flip that switch, way out across the pasture the light in the barn comes on in less than an instant. Yep, TURNING ON A LIGHT is the fastest thing I can think of."

The interviewer was very impressed with the third answer and thought he had found his man. "It's hard to beat the speed of light" he said.

Turning to Bubba, the fourth and final man, the interviewer posed the same question. "Sir, and what is the fastest thing you know of?"

Old Bubba replied, "After hearing the three previous answers, It's obvious to me that the fastest thing known is DIARRHEA."

"WHAT!?" said the interviewer, stunned by the response.

"Oh I can explain." said Bubba. "You see the other day I wasn't feeling so good and I ran for the bathroom. But, before I could THINK, BLINK, or TURN ON THE LIGHT, I had already $#%* in my pants.

Old Bubba is the new "Greeter" at the Pearl Wal-Mart.
